CERAMIC STUDIO
LOCATION: JOZEF KLUYSKENSSTRAAT, GHENT
CONTEXT: SECOND YEAR BACHELOR INTERIOR DESIGN
EVALUATION: 14/20
My fourth design involved designing a building for manufacturing and selling ceramics.
In this design, the gallery is part of the studio. This provides more of an experience for the customer, as the production process is involved in the shopping. The design is inspired by the countless drying racks that a ceramics workshop requires. This has been translated into shelves. These function as drying racks and storage space for the studio on the one hand, and as display space for the gallery on the other hand. The shelves also extend to the first level to allow the horizontality to continue and to make customers curious to have a look upstairs.
The materiality refers to the basis of the programme. Tadelakt consists of the basic component of ceramics, namely clay. This has been applied in a warm earth tone. The work surfaces have been worked out in plywood. The surface for working clay must be a moisture-absorbent material so that it does not stick. The floor is made of concrete, as a reference to the workshop.
Finally, the shelves were extended in front of the windows, as a display area, to attract the attention of passers-by. At eye level, they were omitted to provide a viewing window. Finally, the colour of the tadelakt is eye-catching.
