LOCATION: BIJLOKESITE, GHENT
CONTEXT: FIRST YEAR BACHELOR INTERIOR DESIGN
EVALUATION: 13/20
The last assignment of the first year was a combination of a living and work function in the current Interior Design workshop on the Bijloke site. The work function was designed for Studio Flash, a studio for graphic design and letterpress printing.
A form of closedness was needed to visually separate the living and working areas, without undermining the spacious feeling. The answer was a closed volume that also offers a sense of security to the night functions. The proportion of the passage between these two functions also contributes to this distinction.
The materialisation is inspired by a characteristic element of the programme and the user profile. In this design, this was the work function, more specifically the atelier and the great need for storage space. That is why the well-known blue warehouse racks were used. Linked to the workshop aspect, concrete was used, more specifically an ecologically more acceptable fibre board with a similar appearance. The workshop also inspired the use of perforated steel. This material promotes openness. These material choices have been extended to the private area to enhance the sense of unity.
