PAINTER’S STUDIO
LOCATION: MERENDREE, DEINZE
CONTEXT: STUDENT JOB GWM ARCHITECTEN
During my holiday job at GWM architects, I was given the opportunity to design a painter’s studio. This design was approved as a final preliminary design. It will then be technically developed and optimised for implementation.
The client has been a professional painter for a large part of his life and would like to have a painting studio attached to his home. However, the link between the two should have minimal impact on the façades of the house. In addition, the gutter height of the neighbouring buildings also determines the design.
Because of the numerous surrounding buildings with gable roofs, the new painter’s studio had to radiate tranquillity. It had to be a new element but at the same time part of the whole.
Secondly, there was also a request to provide more surface area than the existing garage. For this reason, the studio connects to the wall of the adjoining parish. Further, the design is based on existing lines in order to create a calm whole.
For the same reason, the roof shape was inspired by shed roofs. This form fits in with the numerous gabled roofs. In addition, it adds a less sharp angle from the garden and gives the interior space more height towards the garden.
Fourthly, light is important for painting: a lot of neutral, natural light is needed. The windows are therefore located in the north-western façade. The studio is not oriented purely to the north, as this also creates a visual link with the garden. This is a great added value for the painter.
Finally, the windows are inspired by the idea of a conservatory. This again strengthens the link with the garden.
